Raising Indian Kids Abroad – How Do You Keep Our Culture Alive?

  • Hi everyone,
I live outside India now, and sometimes I feel confused about how to raise my kids. At home we speak English mostly because of school, but I want them to also know our mother tongue. I want them to respect elders, understand festivals, and know our traditions.
But at the same time, they are growing up in a different country with different culture. Sometimes they feel shy to speak our language outside. Sometimes they question why we follow certain customs.
I don’t want to force them. I also don’t want them to forget who they are.
How are other parents managing this?

    • Do you speak only your native language at home?

    • How do you teach them about Indian festivals and values?

    • Do your kids feel “different” from others?

Would really love to hear your experiences. 😊

Yes it is challenging. We could help teaching our culture while they are at home. But sometimes due to their outer surroundings and circumstances, things may change. Always make sure atleast one time you share your native thoughts.
