How do we create a safe online environment for kids without being controlled?

  • Hi everyone!I’m Emily, mom of two and constantly learning how to balance technology with real life.
One thing I’ve been thinking about lately is how we can keep our kids safe online without making them feel like we’re spying on them or taking away their independence. As parents, we want to protect them from things like cyberbullying, strangers online, and information overload — but at the same time, we also want them to learn to make smart decisions and trust us instead of hiding things.
In our home, we’re trying a more
open-communication approach instead of strict rules. We talk about why certain limits exist instead of saying “Because I said so.” It’s not perfect, but it’s helping reduce arguments and helping them understand why safety matters.
I’d really love to learn from everyone here:

    • How do you balance guidance with independence?

    • Do you have rules that your kids actually agree to?

    • What’s one thing that has worked well (or not worked at all!) for you?

    • How do you maintain trust while still keeping an eye on safety?

Looking forward to your experiences and tips — we’re all learning together.

    Hi Emily,
I totally get this! We’ve found that involving our kids in setting tech rules really helps — when they have a say, they actually follow them. Open conversations instead of strict monitoring have worked much better for us.
